Hidden Valley Adventure – Part 4: Danger

(From the end of Part 3)They were heading toward the chasm,” said Mr. Mole. “I’ll need your help if they’ve fallen or if they’re on the other side. Come on, Kid. Hurry!”

Timothy Mouse panted as he jogged beside Mr. Mole. Rain started falling, making the path slippery. When they arrived at the edge of the narrow chasm, Timothy called out, “Dad! Maria! Are you here?” The wind whipped rain into his eyes. “Dad? Maria? Where are you?”

He heard a faint voice coming closer, “Timothy? Is that you? We’re over here across the chasm. Dad hurt his leg!”

“I’m here with Mr. Mole,” yelled Timothy. “We’re going to save you!”

“At least I hope we are,” he thought. “God, please help us!”

“Okay! I’ll go get Dad,” said Maria. “I think he can limp over here if he leans on me.”

Timothy looked at the chasm. It wasn’t too wide, but it was too far to jump across. “What can we do to get over there, Mr. Mole?” said Timothy.

“Trust me,” said Mr. Mole. “And do what I say.”

“Okay,” said Timothy, with one eyebrow slightly raised.

Mr. Mole pulled a rope out of his backpack and said, “I’ll tie this rope around your waist and then you climb that tree and crawl onto the branch that hangs over the chasm.”

Timothy looked up at the branch and over at the other side of the chasm. He shook his head. “I don’t know if I can do this, Mr. Mole,” he said. But Mr. Mole just kept on tying.

When the rope was tight, Timothy took a deep breath and climbed up the tree.

He saw Dad limping toward the edge of the chasm. “Hi Dad, I’m up here!” he said. “Are you okay?”

“Hi Son!” said Dad. “Yes, I’m fine. Just hurt my leg. Be careful up there so you don’t fall and get hurt!”

Timothy inched out on the branch as the rain kept falling.

“Help, I’m slipping!” he yelled. He fell flat on his chest on the branch and held on with both arms and legs. He could hardly breathe.

“You okay, Timothy?” said Maria.

“Yes,” he said. “But a belly flop on a branch hurts! Mr. Mole, I can’t do this.”

“Yes, you can!” said Mr. Mole. “Carefully crawl around the branch so the rope loops around it.”

Timothy took a deep breath and started crawling around the branch.

“I’m holding the other end of the rope,” said Mr. Mole. “Now drop down off the branch, Timothy.”

Timothy looked down at the rushing stream at the bottom of the narrow chasm, then at Dad and Maria on the other side, and then let go of the branch. Mr. Mole lowered him slightly.

“Start swinging yourself, Timothy, so the branch bounces up and down. Maria, get ready to grab the end of the branch when it comes down to you. Then you and your dad can crawl across.”

As Timothy started swinging back and forth, he heard a loud “Crack!” He looked up and saw the branch breaking.

“Help!” He yelled. “I’m going to fall!” The branch cracked further, and then broke off. Timothy was falling down into the chasm!

(To be continued…)

Trust God, even when you are desperately afraid. When there seems no way out, still trust Him and do not be afraid. He strengthens and protects you, and He holds you in His hand. When danger’s near, choose not to fear!

Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
